Oyster beef is a Chinese-American dish that typically consists of thin slices of beef stir-fried with oyster sauce, garlic, ginger, and vegetables such as mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions.  sauce is a key ingredient in this dish, as it adds a savory, umami flavor to the beef and vegetables.

To make oyster beef, you will need:

  • 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup oyster sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Cooked rice, for serving

Here’s how to make it:


  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large wok or skillet over high heat.
  2. Add the sliced beef and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, until browned. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside.
  3. Add the garlic and ginger to the pan and stir-fry for 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  4. Add the bell pepper, onion, and mushrooms to the pan and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, until tender.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the oyster sauce and water. Add this mixture to the pan and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
  6. Return the beef to the pan and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes, until heated through and coated in the sauce.
  7. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.
  8. Serve the  over cooked rice.
